Austrian continues growth with 5 new destinations
27 March 2008
Austrian Airlines (AUA) has announced that it is continuing its network expansion this year, with five new destinations incorporated into its summer schedule.
The carrier will fly to Sochi, a host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics, from 1 April and to Nizhny Novgorod from 2 April, bringing its total number of destinations in Russia to seven.
Further expansion in eastern Europe will see Baia Mare become the sixth city in AUA's Romanian network from 21 April.
The airline will also develop its portfolio in the Middle East, with the resumption of services to Erbil, Iraq on 1 April and the introduction of flights to Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia on 18 and 19 August.
A number of destinations across eastern Europe and the Middle East will also see increased frequency from AUA this year, including Zagreb, Kiev, Bucharest, Istanbul, Damascus and Tehran.
Alfred Otsch, chief executive of the airline, said: 'We are continuing the successful 'focus east' strategy, which has enabled us to achieve strong passenger growth on short- and medium-haul routes in recent years.'
He added: 'The overall picture is rounded off by extensive frequency increases on 39 existing routes, providing further evidence of our successful new direction.'
