Port Authority airports set new record
28 March 2008
The airports of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey set a new record for passenger numbers last year.
JFK, Newark Liberty, Stewart and LaGuardia airports handled just under 110m passengers in 2007, an increase of more than 5% on the previous year.
The Port Authority said it expects passenger figures to continue to rise this year and announced it has an 'aggressive agenda' to expand airport capacity.
Among the potential developments are new taxiway and runway access projects that could increase efficiency and reduce delays at New York JFK.
These $5m (£2.5m) plans are part of a $150m overall strategy to improve runway operations and provide more flexibility at the New York airport.
Port Authority chairman Anthony R Coscia said: 'Congestion and delays undermine our ability to serve passengers, and passenger demand at our airports is only going to continue to increase.
'We are doing our part at the Port Authority, in the short term with programs such as JFK's runway access improvements, and in the long term, making more than $6bn in airport investments.'
