Singapore airport targets 50m passengers
28 March 2008

A target has been set for Singapore Changi airport to handle 50m passengers a year in five years' time.

Making a speech at the airport, Singapore's transport minister Raymond Lim said that Changi has ambitions to become an important hub in south-east Asia.

He said that liberalisation of the Association of South-East Asian Airlines' (ASEAN) airspace and growth in travel industries is set to help Singapore's airport achieve its goals, Forbes reports.

'Changi airport and Singapore are poised to benefit from the impending liberalisation of air traffic within ASEAN as well as the upcoming tourism developments within Singapore,' Mr Lim said.

'Changi airport is challenging itself to meet a target of handling 50m passengers in five years' time.'

In 2007, Changi airport handled a record 36.7m passengers, 4.8% more than the previous year.

According to figures from the Airports Council International, Atlanta airport was the busiest hub in the world in 2006, with more than 84m travellers passing through.
