Malta welcomes more visitors in February
28 March 2008

The Mediterranean island of Malta welcomed some 57,335 visitors in February, 13.4% more than 12 months earlier, according to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

An increase in European travellers, mainly from Germany, Spain and Italy, is thought to be behind the boost.

However, a fall in visitor numbers was noted in the UK market, which is ordinarily Malta's biggest source of tourists.

The total number of nights spent in Malta in February 2008 increased by 1.6% in comparison to the previous year, while the total number of stays in private accommodation rose by 8.3%.

For the first two months of this year, the number of inbound tourists in Malta was estimated at 121,185, which would represent an 18.5% increase on the same period a year ago.

Some 86.6% of these visitors came from within the EU, according to the NSO.
