'Good' to travel to sustainable destinations
31 March 2008

A conservation group has said that it is good for holidaymakers to visit destinations with sustainable tourist attractions.

The World Wildlife Fund recommends that when visiting foreign countries, tourists try to head to the attractions where they will not pose a risk to wildlife or the natural environment.

A spokesperson for the fund added that it is also a good idea to consider your carbon footprint when travelling within other countries – perhaps opting to take the train for short journeys.

'Clearly people are going to take foreign holidays - and in doing so, they should consider both the impact of how they travel there and the impact of what they do when they get there,' he said.

Globally, huge efforts are being made by countries to develop eco-tourism which can bring both prosperity to a region and help to preserve the environment.

As travellers become more environmentally-aware many are visiting countries such as India and Brazil and helping to highlight the plight of threatened species.
