Open Skies agreement begins
31 March 2008
London Heathrow will be the starting point for the very first flight from the European Union to the US under the new Open Skies agreement.
Later today, the Air France plane will jet off the runway bound for Los Angeles hailing a new era in transatlantic travel.
Now the restrictions have been lifted any US or EU airline can fly between the two destinations opening up thousands of extra seats for passengers.
Yesterday, a Continental Airlines plane landed at Heathrow marking the first plan to touch down under the new rules from New York to London.
'What Open Skies has done is open up the market, and it's good news for the passenger and certainly for Heathrow,' a spokeswoman for BAA, which operates London Heathrow, told AFP.
Before the changes were implemented only British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and US carriers United Airlines and American Airlines were allowed to fly between Heathrow and US destinations.
