Schengen agreement opens up Europe

Passengers in the 24-country Schengen area can pass through nine new member states' airports unchecked, after border checks were removed at midnight on Sunday.
The Schengen Agreement has already allowed an estimated 400 million people to travel between participating countries without a passport, according to Press TV.
Malta, Poland, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia Hungary, Sweden and Slovakia are the latest member states to drop border and maritime frontier checks for air passengers who are Schengen state citizens.
Originally initiated in 1985 and 1990, the Schengen Agreement applies to participating European destinations.
Slovakia's Bratislava M.R. Stefanik Airport was admitted to Schengen airspace along with the other eight new countries on December 21st, 2007.
In order to be granted permission to join it first had to demonstrate that adequate changes to airport policy, including a special departure gate for Schengen passengers, as well appropriate ticket and security checks.
