Austria 'fit for green Euro 2008'
02 April 2008
The Austrian National Tourist Office has announced that the country has implemented a number of environmental measures that make it fit to host a green Euro 2008.
Austria, along with its tournament co-host Switzerland, has developed a sustainability concept designed to minimise the environmental impact of the event and invested substantially in green infrastructure.
The brand new Worthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt is one of the outcomes of the investment, which has been given a government award for its sustainability.
A number of measures are being put to use at the venue, including a solar-heated water system and technology to ensure optimal use of lighting, heating and ventilation.
Josef Proll, Austria's environment minister, said: 'The environment and climate measures introduced by Klagenfurt's Worthersee stadium operators have made a significant contribution to implementation of the sustainability concept.'
Klagenfurt will be one of four destinations in Austria to host Euro 2008 matches, along with Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg.
