Australian luxury lodge opens doors
07 April 2008

A new project that aims to combine luxury with a natural, eco-friendly experience has opened in Australia.

The Southern Ocean Lodge is based on Kangaroo Island, an area known for its natural beauty that boasts 21 national parks that cover a third of the island.

Coming at a cost of $A15m (£6.1m), the lodge includes a modern spa, a wildlife viewing platform and a heated plunge pool.

Visitors to the centre, which is located on the south-west coast of Kangaroo Island at Hanson Bay, will also be able to take part in customised tours and activities and enjoy locally-sourced food and wine.

James Baillie of Baillie Lodges claimed that the new development exceeds 'traditional five-star expectations' and fuses 'design and nature, glamour and wilderness'.

Kangaroo Island is reportedly known as Australia's Galapagos, owing to its unique landscapes and variety of local wildlife, which includes koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, southern right whales, dolphins and penguins.
