UNWTO looks to boost African tourism
17 April 2008

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is set to demonstrate its support of the travel industry in African countries with a tour of the continent.

Secretary general Francesco Frangialli will visit Mauritania, Cote d'Ivoire and Kenya, three countries the UNWTO believes have repositioned themselves to launch their tourism offers to travellers.

According to the latest world tourism barometer from the UNWTO, Africa saw an increase of 44m visitors last year.

This represents growth of 8% for the year, which is above the world average.

'These figures prove that tourism has the potential to foster sustainable development and Africa as a whole is among the top growing regions,' Mr Frangialli said.

'But many countries who have experienced less favourable developments in the recent past have now the opportunity to regain tourism strength.'

The countries that Mr Frangialli will visit have overcome a number of problems recently, with both Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire experiencing internal tensions relating to political disputes.
