Hainan looking to boost tourism appeal
22 April 2008

The Chinese island of Hainan has announced plans to develop its appeal to tourists.

This new focus could represent a shift in priorities for the island, which has been a significant economic zone for China over the past 20 years.

A number of initiatives are set to take place over the coming year, including the creation of duty-free shops in the cities of Haikou, Sanya, Qionghai and Wanning, People's Daily Online reports.

Hainan Party chief Wei Liucheng said: 'Hainan's unique natural environment can contribute to the overall economy of the country in the next five to ten years, or even longer, focusing on tourism instead of science and technology.'

According to People's Daily Online, Hainan is seen as the Chinese equivalent of Hawaii.

It boasts tropical beaches, forests, a picturesque rural landscape and a rich folk culture.

The island is also characterised by a range of features that make it tourism-friendly, such as visa-free travel and freedom of aviation since 2000.
