Abu Dhabi looks to boost appeal to tourists
28 April 2008

Plans have been unveiled to boost the appeal of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a tourist destination.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the UAE, reviewed a number of strategies designed to energise the economy of Abu Dhabi's western region, Gulf News reports.

Developments, set to be based around the Al Sila area, could include shopping malls, marinas, cruise ship facilities, parks, golf courses and island-style resorts.

A number of artificial desert islands are being developed in western Abu Dhabi by the UAE's Tourism Development and Investment Company and will be gradually completed over the next 12 years.

Sheikh Khalifa also reviewed the progress of the Qasar Al Sarab retreat in the Liwa desert, a complex that will boast 42 luxury villas as well as a central hotel.

Abu Dhabi is one of many thriving locations in the UAE that is pursuing major development projects, such as a Formula One circuit on Yas Island, the Saadiyat Island project and Masdar City, which is set to run entirely on solar power.
