Tourism 'thriving' in central China
28 April 2008
Tourism has developed into one of the fastest growing industries in central China, according to reports.
Data from the fourth Central China Travel Expo showed that the average annual growth in income and visitor numbers in the country's six central provinces has reached 20% in recent years.
This is higher than the growth rate in the country's gross domestic product and the average level of expansion in China's broader tourism industry, People's Daily Online reports.
In 2007, the country's six central provinces Shanxi, Jiangxi, Henan, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan welcomed a total of 599m domestic and foreign visitors.
A concept has been proposed to build a joint central China tourism cooperation zone, which will utilise the region's resources and geographical advantages to their fullest.
Central China's promise as a tourist region has led to some 11bn yuan (£790m) being invested in the development of new tour destinations, resorts and hotels.
