Montenegro 'values biodiversity'
09 June 2008
Montenegro's minister of tourism and environmental protection has underlined the country's commitment to biodiversity and ecologically sound practices.
Predrag Nenezic told the Convention on Biodiversity in Bonn, Germany that Montenegro is committed to becoming an eco-tourism hotspot, reports New Europe.
The country's government intends to create a sustainable tourism industry through the use of natural resources and rural development.
Representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) praised Mr Nenezic for his country's commitment to sustainable growth.
Garret Tankosic Kelly of the UNDP said: 'The natural beauty and high biodiversity of Montenegro offers an obvious potential [for tourism].'
He added that Montenegro is 'ideally positioned' to attract tourists with an interest in sustainability, who are willing to pay up to 20% more for sustainable travel products.
Montenegro is the newest fully-recognised country in the world after it was declared an independent state in June 2006.
