New Wellington centre to be unveiled
11 June 2008
Plans are to be unveiled for a new visitor centre that is expected to deliver a substantial boost to the tourism industry in Wellington, New Zealand.
Industry bosses and the mayor of Wellington will attend a ceremony today (11 June) to launch a promotional DVD and scale model of the new visitor centre at the Karori Sanctuary.
This will be the first public preview of the attraction, which is set to begin welcoming visitors in late 2009.
The centre will aim to offer a 'world class' experience through its design and layout and could boost the number of annual visitors to the Karori Sanctuary from 70,000 to nearly 200,000 in its first three years of operation.
Tim Cossar, chief executive of promotional firm Positively Wellington, said: 'The centre's potential impact on Wellington's international visitor market is significant.
'If 30,000 international visitors spent another night here because of the Karori Sanctuary, that would mean another $4.5m [£1.7m] per year being spent in Wellington.'
Visitors to New Zealand will find the sanctuary, which is home to a variety of endangered native species of wildlife, just outside downtown Wellington.
