Heathrow, Gatwick buck UK airport trend
11 June 2008
Airport operator BAA has released passenger figures for May, showing that four of its seven UK bases saw a year-on-year increase in traffic in the month.
The London hubs of Heathrow and Gatwick both saw passenger numbers increase, by 0.6% and 1.1% respectively.
Southampton achieved by far the biggest rise in traffic, of 6.9%, while Edinburgh saw activity climb by 0.7%.
The performance of these four gateways was not enough to constitute a rise in BAA's total passenger figures in May, which dropped by 0.5% to 12.7m.
BAA attributed this fall to a reduction in UK domestic traffic of 5.3% and a 2.5% contraction in the European charter market.
A number of other key areas for the operator's UK hubs saw modest increases in passenger demand, including the European scheduled sector (0.9%), the North Atlantic region (0.5%) and the long-haul market (1.2%).
