Bmi trials electronic boarding
18 June 2008

Bmi has launched trials of a new paperless boarding system allowing passengers to check in for their flights online and have their boarding pass delivered to a mobile phone or digital device.

The carrier, which is London Heathrow's second largest airline, claims that it is the first British operator to test the new paper-free system.

Routes from Edinburgh and Manchester to Heathrow and from Belfast City to the London airport were the first to use the facility.

It is hoped the trial will prove that paperless boarding, which relies on customers having phones or devices with picture messaging capabilities, will offer a quicker and smoother airport experience.

Bmi also said that the innovation could help it maintain its status as one of the UK's most punctual airlines.

Managing director Peter Spencer said: 'Bmi's new paperless boarding system is a significant step forward and will offer customers the opportunity to bypass check-in processes at the airport.

'Customers who check in online can have a boarding pass delivered straight to their mobile phone allowing them to proceed straight to security or to bmi's fast bag-drop stations if they have luggage to check-in.'
