New city to be built in Dubai desert
23 June 2008
Visitors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon have a brand new destination to visit when an entire city is built in the desert in Dubai.
The plans were unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the UAE, who designed the initiative to be respectful towards the region's cultural heritage.
Covering more than 240m square metres, the city will feature new tourist landmarks, distinctive civil buildings and education, financial and commercial facilities.
The project will also include more landscaped parkland than can be found in London and New York combined.
World renowned architect Eric Kuhne of London-based CivicArts is behind the overall design for the project.
Mr Kuhne said: 'His Highness Sheikh Mohammed should be applauded for his commitment to creating a new Dubai which will redefine the quality of civic life for all the citizens and guests of the Arabian Gulf.
'His vision can be compared to that of Shah Abbas I who created Nisf-e-Jahan, the elegant 16th century capital of Persia whose parks, gardens and libraries reflected the heavens.'
The city will comprise four centres or 'houses', including a nature area incorporating family parks, zoological gardens and hotels.
