AA to launch inflight web access
25 June 2008

American Airlines (AA) is to launch a trial of inflight broadband internet access.

The carrier announced that it has completed the first aircraft installation of its Aircell broadband connectivity system.

AA will be the first US airline to offer this particular internet access solution and plans to install the technology on all 15 of its Boeing 767-200 aircraft, which operate primarily on transcontinental routes.

Passengers will be able to access web pages, virtual private networks such as corporate intranets and email accounts if they have a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop, digital assistant or portable gaming device.

While there will be a charge for internet access, certain web pages, such as the American Airlines site, will be free. This will enable passengers to check gate information and flight times.

Dave Bijur, an Aircell executive, said the system would be capable of handling a planeload of people accessing the internet.

American Airlines is based at Dallas Fort Worth airport in Texas and flies to international destinations including London, Paris, Sydney, Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro.
