ACI announces Europe's top airports
25 June 2008

The Airports Council International (ACI) Europe has announced the winners of its 'excellence in airport operations' awards for 2008.

Airports were recognised in separate categories based on their traffic flow, with Madrid-Barajas airport taking the top honour in the section of airports with more than 25m passengers.

The Spanish airport was recognised by the ACI for achieving 'astonishing growth while executing a very successful expansion'.

In the category of airports handling between 10m and 25m passengers every year, Manchester airport took the award.

The judges said that the British hub should be praised for its 'simple, innovative approach to attracting airlines'.

Lyon-Saint Exupery airport won the award in the 5m-10m passenger category and was chosen for the work it has done to keep up with market forces.

Last year the Lyon airport opened a new terminal which helped it to achieve growth of 8.5% in passenger figures.
