England invites visitors to comedy destinations
26 June 2008

Enjoy England, the organisation responsible for marketing England as a tourist destination, has launched a new campaign designed to attract visitors to locations famous for their comedy connections.

The group has created a map that tourists can download, which identifies more than 150 locations with a comedic significance.

These include the birthplaces of much-loved comedians, locations that inspired famous jokes and venues for major comedy festivals.

Among the destinations on the map are Torquay, which was the location of the infamous hotel of Fawlty Towers; Holmfirth in Yorkshire, which featured in Last of the Summer Wine; and Norwich, the home of Alan Partridge.

Laurence Bresh, Enjoy England's marketing manager, said: 'England is renowned for producing some of the best comedy in the world and our sense of humour is a trait that the English are famous for.

'Comedy is an integral part of our heritage and culture and the Comedy England campaign will encourage visitors to explore some of the regions, locations and attractions which have contributed to this and further increase the 100m trips that Brits take in their own country every year.'
