Rhodes to celebrate milestones in 2009

The Rhodes tourist office has invited holidaymakers to join in with a number of milestone celebrations on the Greek island in 2009.
Next year will mark 700 years since the founding of Rhodes medieval town, which is one of the island's many historical attractions.
Another tourist draw is the ruins of Kamiros, in the west of the island, and 2009 will mark 250 years since they were first discovered.
Kamiros was once one of Rhodes' most important cities and remains one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in all of Greece.
Amongst the ruins of the city visitors can find the foundations of the temple of Athena Polias, which dates back to around the third century BC, as well as a reservoir capable of supplying 400 families, a portico and the remains of private houses.
On the opposite coast of Rhodes stands the Lindos Acropolis, which was once part of a city that flourished in the same period of Kamiros.
The structure now sits on a hill above the medieval town of Lindos, which is known for its white-washed buildings and narrow cobbled streets.
