Taiwan welcomes historic flight from China
07 July 2008

The Asian travel network received a boost on 4 July when a Chinese tourist flight landed in Taiwan for the first time in nearly 60 years.

China and Taiwan had been estranged from one another since their civil war ended in 1949, leading to a six-decade ban on flights that saw the island of Taiwan receive no visitors from its closest neighbour.

This ban came to an end at 08:05 local time on 4 July when an Airbus A330 landed in Taipei following a flight of about 95 minutes from Guangzhou in southern China.

The beginning of the resumption of cordial relations between China and Taiwan occurred in June when they agreed to make direct flights available for tourists.

Wang Yi, director of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said: "Today is a new start in the history of exchanges between the two sides.

"Cross-Strait relations are facing a rare opportunity for development."
