London theatre toasts record year
09 July 2008

The London theatre scene proved as popular as ever last year, with attendances exceeding 13m for the first time ever, according to a report.

Statistics released by the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) showed that a total of 13.6m people went to a show in the capital last year, delivering total box office revenue of £469.9m.

Musicals proved as popular as ever, accounting for two-thirds of all tickets sold, with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Grease leading the way, partly thanks to interest generated by TV talent shows to find their primary performers.

Shows that opened at the end of 2006, such as Wicked and Spamalot, also attracted large audiences last year, while Equus, one of the most successful plays, was helped by Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe appearing in the lead role.

SOLT commercial manager Paul James said: 'The story this year is of a vibrant sector. I think we are set fair for an excellent year.'

An average audience of 781 people attended London theatre shows in 2007 and there were a total of 17,455 performances throughout the year.
