10 July 2008
The rising popularity of holidays in Dubai has been highlighted by the latest figures from the emirate's department of tourism showing rising hotel revenues this year.
Hotel establishments took 4.3bn dirhams (£593.6m) in revenue in the first quarter of the year, an increase of more than a fifth on the 3.5bn dirhams recorded in the first three months of 2007.
Dubai's hotels and apartments reported a year-on-year increase of 7% in their number of guests in the first quarter, from 1.769m in 2007 to 1.891m this year.
The number of nights spent by guests rose by 10%, from 5.5m in the first three months of 2007 to 6m in the first quarter of 2008.
Dubai is famous for its hotels, with the Burj Al Arab luxury establishment, which is modelled on the sail of a boat, providing one of the most distinctive elements of the city's skyline.
The Atlantis hotel and tourism complex, which will be located at the head of the Palm Jumeirah man-made island, is set to open in September this year.
