Italy boasts new heritage sites
10 July 2008

Italy is now home to three more Unesco World Heritage sites following a meeting of the UN agency in Canada.

The Unesco commission met in Quebec on 8 July and decided that, among other locations, Mantova, Sabbioneta and the Retica Railway should be added to the World Heritage list.

These additions bring the total number of protected sites in Italy to 43.

Mantova, Sabbioneta and the Retica Railway were three of 27 new sites that were added to Unesco's protected list this month.

There were 19 cultural sites and eight natural locations added to the list, including the Preah Vihear temple in Cambodia, Stari Grad plain in Croatia and the historic centre of Camaguey in Cuba.

Two new African locations were also announced as World Heritage sites by Unesco – the Mijikenda Kaya Forests in Kenya and the Le Morne cultural landscape in Mauritius.
