US welcomes more visitors in April

The United States department of commerce has announced that the US welcomed 4.1m international visitors in April 2008, an increase of 2% on the previous year.
Tourists spent a record $11.6bn (£5.8bn) during the month, which represented an increase of 21% on the previous year and brought total spending for the year so far to $45.3bn, reports Travel Daily News.
Arrivals from the UK increased by 11% in April and have climbed by 7% for the year to date, leading to UK tourists accounting for 40% of all western European visitation.
For the year to date, the number of tourists coming to the US from France, Italy and Germany increased by 23%, 22% and 17% respectively, continuing growth trends from 2007.
One of the United States' most popular destinations, New York, was recently voted America and Canada's best city in the Travel & Leisure 2008 readers' survey.
The other cities in the top five were San Francisco, Chicago, Charleston and Santa Fe.
