Record passenger numbers for Dubai airport
21 July 2008

Dubai international airport handled some 18.46m passengers in the first half of the year, representing the busiest ever six-month period for the gateway.

In the first six months of the year, the airport saw an average of 100,000 passengers every day and around 3m travellers per month.

The busiest month of all was March, with some 3.25m customers passing through the airport.

Dubai international was already the world's fastest growing airport in 2007, with 34.34m passengers, and is the busiest gateway in the Middle East and north Africa.

Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai's Civil Aviation Authority and chairman of Dubai Airports, said: 'Dubai international is the main gateway to the city of Dubai which is recognised as a global commerce and tourism hub.

'The growth of the city and that of the airport are entwined in a directly proportional relationship.'

By the end of the year, Dubai international airport is expected to have handled around 40m passengers, smashing the record set in 2007.
