London City could see expansion
30 July 2008

There could soon be a wider range of flights available from London City airport as local authorities consult on plans to expand the gateway.

Newham Council officials are currently discussing proposals that would see the annual number of flights from the east London airport rise from 80,000 to 120,000.

London City spokesman Charles Buchanan said that approval of the plans would bring a number of benefits for local workers as well as travellers.

'This expansion will create economic activity in the area and provide opportunities for employment for another thousand people,' he told BBC News.

There has been some opposition to the proposals, however, with local people complaining that the higher number of flights would lead to excessive noise levels.

London City airport is mainly recognised as a gateway for business travellers but in recent years it has been offering more flights for leisure customers.

British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM are among the carriers that fly from the airport to destinations including Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Berlin and Barcelona.
