Managers encouraged to take a break
05 August 2008

Nearly three-quarters of managers make sure they have internet access when they go away on holiday, it has been revealed.

Research by Peninsula showed that the average managers spends around six hours and 40 minutes of their ten-day holiday dealing with work-related emails.

Company leaders are expected to keep in contact with their staff even during their break, with 74 per cent of employees claiming they would presume to hear from their boss when they are away.

However, managers are entitled to a bit of relaxation, said Peninsula managing director Peter Done, who advised that firms encourage their staff to take a break.

'Employers should encourage their managers to enjoy their holidays, not insisting they make contact with the office,' he explained. 'They should not expect employees to contact the office at all and need to make provisions for the absence of the employee.'

Last year, research by the Chartered Management Institute found that 77% of senior executives believe their holidays help them to 'cope better with work stress'.
