Air France posts disappointing profits
05 August 2008

Rising fuel prices have led a number of airlines to announce disappointing profit reports, it has been announced.

Air France-KLM revealed that net profits between April and June were nearly 60 per cent less than the corresponding period last year, reported the BBC.

The news follows similar announcements from both British Airways and budget carrier Ryanair in recent weeks.

BA has revealed an 88% drop in pre-tax profits for the second quarter of 2008, terming it the "worst trading environment ever".

Ryanair has suggested it could see an overall loss of up to 60m euros (£47m) for the year.

However, airlines are taking action to reduce costs, according to the BBC, with Air France in talks about a possible joint-venture with French utility company Veolia to run rail services.

BA is reportedly also in talks with both Spanish airline Iberia and American Airlines which could result in possible mergers.
