Be alert on holiday 'as you would at home'
06 August 2008
Holidaymakers are more likely to stay safe on holiday if they remain as streetwise as they would at home.
Although many travellers are more relaxed with their belongings when they are away, experts say that precautions are necessary to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
Speaking about crime in the Carribean, Adam Vaitilingam, author of the Rough Guide to Antigua and Barbuda, said: 'I think traditionally people have been worried about crime in Jamaica far more than any of the other Caribbean islands, but the reality is there is a low but significant crime rate in all Caribbean islands.'
He added that holidaymakers often act differently when they are in foreign countries and may 'go walking on a dark beach at night without taking any precautions' or 'be more flashy with the jewellery and money'.
'On the whole, island's like Antigua are incredibly safe for tourists and crime rates against tourists and other visitors is normally exceptionally low,' he concluded.
