Airlines to slash flights by 7%
07 August 2008

Airlines are facing an incredibly tough year as they are forced to cut 60m seats before Christmas, it has been announced.

The global industry will slash its flights by 7% in the run up to the festive period, and there is no certainty they will reintroduce them in 2008, reported the Guardian.

Steve Casley, chief operating officer of flight information firm OAG, told the newspaper: 'It looks quite possible that we may be facing a far more severe global downturn than we have experienced before.'

In total, routes at 275 different airports around the world will have been cancelled by the end of the year, he explained.

Commenting on the future of air travel, industry consultant Chris Tarry said that 2009 is predicted to be 'even more difficult' than this year.

British Airways recently revealed an 88% decrease in pre-tax profits for the second quarter of 2008, claiming it was the 'worst trading environment ever'.
