Steve Casley, chief operating officer of flight information firm OAG, told the newspaper: 'It looks quite possible that we may be facing a far more severe global downturn than we have experienced before.'
In total, routes at 275 different airports around the world will have been cancelled by the end of the year, he explained.
Commenting on the future of air travel, industry consultant Chris Tarry said that 2009 is predicted to be 'even more difficult' than this year.
