Brits 'mistakenly relying on EHICs'
07 August 2008

Brits are travelling around Europe mistakenly believing they have full travel insurance, it has been claimed.

American Express Insurance Services has stated that 2.3 million people from the UK visited a European country in the past 12 months without full cover because they thought the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) was adequate insurance.

However, the EHIC simply gives Brits reduced or free medical care, dependent on the country, warned the firm, and does not cover things like lost baggage or holiday cancellation.

'[EHICs] are not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance so you will not be covered for delays, loss of baggage or cancellations or experience other benefits of having an independent travel insurance policy,' said the company head, Chris Rolland.

With so many Brits heading to Europe this month, it is vital they check they are properly covered, he added.

M&S Money reported earlier in the year that over half of all its currency sales would be for euros this summer as it remains a popular destination for Brits' family holidays.
