Holidays are 'none negotiable'
08 August 2008

Despite the gloomy economic climate, holidays are still a non-negotiable luxury, according to one expert.

Tom Hall, travel editor of Lonely Planet, has said that the credit crunch has not stopped people booking flights and added that for "real value' for money travellers need to 'get outside' the euro-zone.

His words come as one in 14 of the world's airline seats are expected to be removed from October and airfares are predicted to rise.

'I think people see holidays as a non-negotiable thing,' Mr Hall said.

'The question is whether they are going to cut back on those additional trips, in addition to your main holiday, are you going to cut back on one of your short breaks?...That's a question that we don’t really know the answer to at the moment.'

He added: 'It's a tough environment for airlines, they are obviously looking at cost cutting measures ... It is a real balancing act and I think the savvy traveller can still take advantage of it and can still travel cheaply.'
