Turkish Airlines to launch from Birmingham
11 August 2008
Turkish Airlines is set to launch a new flight from Birmingham airport to Istanbul this year.
The new connection, which will be the first scheduled service to Istanbul from the West Midlands region, will operate five times a week from 15 December.
As well as providing a direct link to the most populous city in Turkey, the flight will also enable travellers to connect to a number of other international destinations.
Osman Battal, Turkish Airlines' UK director, said: 'Not only can we offer air travellers in Birmingham and the wider region new direct flights to Istanbul, but we are also able to fly people to over 140 onward destinations including Bangkok, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Delhi, Bombay and Singapore.
'Although we will be launching in December with five weekly flights, we aspire to be operating daily services from Birmingham by summer 2009 and carrying 30,000 passengers a year by this time.'
Peter Vella, business development director at Birmingham airport, said it is 'fantastic' that the hub will soon be welcoming one of Europe's major air carriers.
Turkish Airlines, which is a member of Star Alliance alongside the likes of bmi and Lufthansa, operates flights to 142 international destinations from its Istanbul base.
