Thousands participate in trial of new Dubai terminal
14 August 2008
Thousands of people from across the United Arab Emirates volunteered to take part in the first operational trial of Dubai international airport's new terminal.
The advanced test, which followed a series of basic trials carried out over the past few months, attracted some 2,200 volunteers, many of whom came to the new terminal 3 with family and friends.
There will be more tests involving public participation over the coming months as Dubai Airports analyses the performance of its new terminal in typical operating scenarios.
Volunteers acted as passengers and moved through the facility to test traffic flow, way-finding signage and other operational aspects.
Paul Griffiths, chief executive of the airport operating company, said the response from the public had been 'overwhelming' and thanked all the volunteers who came forward.
He added: 'These trials will prepare us as much as possible to ensure that we meet the needs of our customers when our new terminal opens.'
When it is fully operational, Dubai international's terminal 3 is expected to boost the airport's capacity to 60m passengers per year.
