'Dramatic' growth in AUA's eastern services
20 August 2008
Austrian Airlines (AUA) has announced 'dramatic passenger growth' on services to its Focus East regions.
Austrian's Focus East strategy has seen its network expand to incorporate 48 destinations in 24 countries, leading the airline to claim that it now serves more eastern European and central Asian cities than any other carrier.
Despite the widespread slowdown in the aviation industry, Austrian Airlines has seen growth of 11.2% in the number of passengers carried in its Focus East regions.
The airline said that this increase 'virtually offsets' its planned reduction of 12% in passenger volume on long-haul flights.
From January to July 2008, Austrian Airlines carried a total of 6.3m scheduled and charter passengers, which represented an increase of 1.2% on the previous year.
The Focus East region saw passenger growth of 13.4%, which was driven by the addition of new routes to destinations including Baia Mare in Romania and the Russian cities of Sochi and Nizhniy Novgorod.
