AA launches inflight internet service
21 August 2008
American Airlines (AA) has launched its new inflight internet service, which it claims is the first facility of its kind on the US market.
The carrier said that the beginning of its new mobile broadband service, Gogo, provided by Aircell, marked the start of the 'next wireless revolution'.
Customers travelling on AA's Boeing 767 can access the internet on non-stop flights from New York to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Miami.
Dan Garton, the airline's executive vice-president of marketing, said: 'We are pleased to provide our customers with the unprecedented ability to stay connected to their family, friends and business associates on the ground via the internet while travelling at 30,000 feet above the United States.
'With today's launch, American Airlines makes history as the first and only US airline to offer customers full inflight internet connectivity, demonstrating once again our industry leadership and focus on our customers.'
The Aircell service works by turning AA planes into Wi-Fi hotspots, enabling passengers to surf the web, check their emails and send instant messages on their laptops and digital devices.
It will cost $12.95 (£7) on flights lasting more than three hours and will include full internet access but not mobile phone or voice over internet protocol facilities.
