Games 'leaves positive legacy in Beijing'

The 2008 Olympic Games will leave a positive legacy in its host city of Beijing, according to International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.
Speaking at a closing press conference on 24 August, Mr Rogge said that the event has brought positive changes to China that are likely to be noticeable far into the future.
He told reporters that the hosts of the 2008 Games had put the bar 'very high' and said that the 29th Olympiad is likely to be the most watched Games in history.
Physical benefits to China that resulted from the event include new sports venues, a new airport terminal, new roads, improvements to mass transit and other infrastructure developments.
Commenting on the new sports centres, the most significant of which is the striking Bird's Nest stadium, Mr Rogge said: 'These venues will be used by the students of the universities, by the owners of the different venues, the workers' unions. This is, I believe, a great legacy.'
A record 204 National Olympic Committees sent athletes to the Beijing Games and 87 of these committees were included in the final medal count.
During the course of the Games, 43 new world records and 132 Olympic records were set.
