Couples 'the UK's biggest travelling group'
01 September 2008
Couples are the biggest and most important travelling group for the UK tourism industry, according to VisitBritain.
Elliot Frisby, a spokesman for the tourism organisation, referred to statistics showing that Britons took 57.9m overnight trips as couples in 2007 and spent £9.5bn.
This means that couples have the largest share of the consumer market, followed by people travelling alone, who made some 38m overnight trips last year.
Mr Frisby said that one of the UK's big selling points is its diversity, from bustling cities such as London to historical locations such as Bath.
'Our cities are benefiting from regeneration programmes, contemporary attractions, new hotels and architecture,' he said.
'We benefit from centuries of history and heritage attractions as well as a unique culture with events, ceremonies and more quirky traditions, rooted in music, film and literature.'
According to the United Kingdom Travel Survey, UK residents made 32.9m overnight trips in the UK between January and April 2008.
