Air France trialling mobile boarding passes
05 September 2008

Air France is currently carrying out a trial of electronic boarding passes on mobile phones.

The airline is testing out the service, which it claims is a 'world premiere for international round-trip flights', on its route between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam.

Personal identification is the only paper document that travellers taking part in the scheme will need.

After registering their mobile details with Air France, passengers receive their boarding pass with a secure barcode through a message to their mobile phone or an email for internet-enabled phones.

The electronic pass contains all the written information displayed on a conventional boarding pass and is scanned at the boarding gate before being checked by stewards on the plane.

Patrick Roux, vice-president of marketing for Air France, said that this initiative is the aviation industry's 'next major technological innovation after e-ticketing'.

He added: 'This is the first time customers will be able to travel to and from two countries with an electronic boarding pass.'
