Record-breaking month for Exeter airport
05 September 2008
Exeter international airport has celebrated achieving the highest passenger numbers in its 70-year history in August.
The south-west England gateway handled some 114,600 travellers in the month, representing an overall increase of 1% on August 2007 and a rise of 3% in people on charter holiday routes.
Jamie Christon, Exeter's deputy managing director, said that the airport was 'absolutely delighted' with its achievement.
He added: 'The most popular destinations from Exeter were to Tenerife, Majorca, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria but there was a notable take up for the flights to Turkey and the twentieth year for our flights to Toronto have proved a great success.'
Exeter airport managed to break its monthly passenger record in August despite the slowdown in the British economy and the falling traffic levels seen at other gateways.
Regional carrier Flybe is among the airlines operating from Exeter, providing flights to destinations including Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam and Brussels.
