19 September 2008
Qantas has announced that it has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380 at a special ceremony at the plane manufacturer's headquarters in Toulouse.
The plane will be flown to Australia and is set to arrive in Sydney at around 09:00 local time on the morning of 21 September.
After being presented to 3,000 Qantas employees and their families in Sydney, the plane will undergo a series of flight training and ground activities before entering commercial service.
Qantas' A380 will be laid out with 450 seats in four cabins 332 in economy, 72 in business, 32 in premium economy and 14 in first class.
John Borghetti, the airline's executive general manager, said: 'The Qantas A380 will redefine the long-haul air travel experience and offer passengers greater levels of space, comfort, innovation and style.
'Working with Qantas creative director Marc Newson, we have reinvented our international flying product from spacious suites in first class and a new, fully-flat Skybed in business, to a brand new premium economy cabin and the use of the latest technology in the manufacture of an all-new economy class seat.'
The first Qantas A380 routes will connect Melbourne to Los Angeles from 20 October and link Sydney to Los Angeles from 24 October.
