New Dubai development to boast world's tallest building
06 October 2008
Property developer Nakheel has announced plans for a new harbour development in Dubai that will include the world's tallest building.
The tower at the centre of the new location will reach more than a kilometre into the sky, dwarfing its nearest rival, the under-construction Burj Dubai tower, which will be 818 metres tall.
Comprised of four individual towers within a single structure, the building will be based on a crescent-shaped podium and will boast more than 200 floors.
Other features of the giant tower and inner-city harbour development will include 250,000 square metres of hotel and hospitality space and 100,000 square metres of land for retail purposes.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the chairman of Nakheel parent company Dubai World, said: 'There is nothing like it in Dubai.
'Nakheel harbour and tower is located in the heart of 'new Dubai', where we have focused on creating a true community, a location for living, working, relaxing and entertaining, for art and culture. All of this is concentrated in one area.'
The design of the new development will incorporate elements from great Islamic cities of the past, including Alhambra in Spain, Alexandria in Egypt, Tangier in Morocco and Isfahan in Iran.
