BA, Virgin drop fuel surcharges
15 October 2008

Rival carriers British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have both announced reductions in their fuel surcharges.

British Airways announced that from midnight on 15 October, its fuel surcharges for World Traveller customers on flights of more than nine hours will be cut from £109 to £96 per flight.

On journeys of less than nine hours, these customers will see fuel surcharges fall from £78 to £68.

World Traveller Plus passengers will benefit from surcharges being dropped from £121 to £114.50 on flights of more than nine hours and from £88 to £83 on journeys of less than nine hours.

Virgin Atlantic's economy passengers will pay £68 rather than £78 on short-haul services and £96 rather than £109 on long-haul flights, while premium economy surcharges will fall from £88 to £83 for long-haul and from £121 to £114.50 for short-haul travel.

Fuel charges on the airline's upper class services will remain the same at £98 for shorter journeys and £133 for longer flights.

Virgin Atlantic said that the drop in fuel surcharges is in response to the recent 'sustained decrease' in the price of crude oil.
