Tuna to be tossed in Australia
18 November 2008
Lovers of unusual events will be heading en masse to Australia in January for the annual Tunarama Festival in Port Lincoln.
Scheduled for 24 to 26 January next year, this tuna-themed event sees a number of stalls, sideshows and rides organised along the picturesque Port Lincoln seafront.
The highlight of the festival is the John West Tuna Toss competition, which invites both male and female visitors to see how far they can fling a tuna weighing between eight and ten kilos.
People travel from all over the world to take part in the contest, which offers a top prize of AU$7,000 (£3,000) for the longest throw.
The world record in the competition is currently held by ex-Olympic hammer thrower Sean Carlin, who tossed a tuna 37.23 metres in 1998.
While they are not watching fish being flung through the air, visitors to the Tunarama Festival can browse through markets selling food, art and crafts as well as entertainment stalls.
The event is held in Port Lincoln, in the state of South Australia, around the time of the Australia Day public holiday in January, an occasion which sees a number of events and celebrations being held all over the country.
Opodo cheap flights, hotels and car hire - let the journey begin!
