Paphos airport gets off to smooth start
18 November 2008

Cyprus' new Paphos international airport was launched this week and its initial operations were handled with no problems, according to reports.

The first departure from the airport – a Cyprus Airways flight to London Heathrow – took off on time at 10:30 on the morning of 17 November, while the first arrival was a Finnair flight from Helsinki.

Adam Aspris, a spokesman for airport operating company Hermes, told the Cyprus Mail that operations ran smoothly throughout the day.

'We are very pleased about the first day of operation and all the procedures ran smoothly,' Mr Aspris said.

'There were no major problems, and the passengers seemed pleased with the level and quality of service they received.'

Hermes set up a number of tests to ensure that there would be no problems on the new airport's first day of operations, with mock passengers using the facilities and reporting back to the company.

There were 14 inbound and 14 outbound services on the new hub's first day and more than 2m passengers are expected to pass through in its first year of operations.
