Ghent recognised as world-leading historical spot
18 November 2008
Tourism Flanders has announced that the city of Ghent was ranked third in a recent survey of the world's most authentic historical destinations.
The Belgian destination was listed ahead of 106 other cities in the survey, which is published in the December issue of National Geographic Traveller magazine.
Top of the list was Melk Abbey, a Benedictine abbey founded in 1089 that is located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river in Austria.
The survey, which was compiled by a panel of some 280 people, evaluated a number of factors to judge a destination's historical authenticity, including environmental and ecological quality and the condition of historic buildings and sites.
Dawn Page, director of Tourism Flanders-Brussels, said: 'Ghent is one of Flanders' most charming and diverse cities, offering its visitors an interesting range of cultural experiences as well as fabulous gastronomy and quirky shops which lie amongst perfectly preserved buildings.
'Ghent really is one of Flanders' hidden gems and we are delighted that it has been recognised by one of the world's leading travel magazines.'
