US airspace to be opened up for holidays
19 November 2008

More airspace is to be opened up in the United States over the Thanksgiving and Christmas period in an attempt to reduce delays and congestion, it has been announced.

President George Bush confirmed in a speech to the Department of Transportation that airspace usually reserved for military use will be opened up in the country's mid-west, south-west and west coast regions.

The president said that a lot of people are 'nervous' about travelling in the US over the holiday period owing to the higher likelihood of delays, lost bags and overbooking of flights.

'They're saying, "Will travelling home for the holidays be 'It's A Wonderful Life', or will it be 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'?"' Mr Bush commented.

'We innovated last year to ease the travel; it worked, and now we're expanding that innovation this year.'

The president also confirmed that the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration will have more staff available to deal with the holiday rush.

Some 24m people are expected to catch flights in and around the United States over the Thanksgiving holiday period alone this year.
